A New Mexico State lawsuit has uncovered internal presentations at Meta that estimate each day 100,000 child users of Facebook and Instagram received messages including images of adult genitalia and other sexual harassment.
The finding comes as newly unredacted files were published as part of the lawsuit filed in December. The main issue surrounds the ‘People You May Know’ function which often connected known predators with child users. One Ex-meta employee even estimated that this feature could have been instrumental in up to ‘75% of all inappropriate adult-minor contact.’
New Mexico asserts that Meta has ignored widespread predatory behavior on its platform and failed to limit features connecting children with adults of ill intent. The lawsuit alleges that Meta falsely reassured the public about platform safety, despite internal findings, including a scale of 100,000
